We plan to feature displays and unique items from our collection on this page. Of course, a visit to our building would be the best viewing experience. We hope to see you soon.
When the Alden Heritage Center reopens in September, a new display in the Davis Room awaits visitors and shows items belonging to some of Alden’s former doctors. The first doctor in Alden was John M. Harrington; his 1830 letter of certification is on display. Dr. Carlos Bowman’s top hat is displayed on top of the case. His home and office were on Broadway where the Alden State Bank drive-thru is located now. A wooden splint for a child, used by Dr. Clarence Tyler, is in the case. Dr. Tyler’s office and home were located at 13140 Main Street. All of these doctors made house calls, including Dr. Benjamin Gipple, a contemporary of Drs. Bowman and Tyler. The doctor bag he carried from house to house is included in the display. His son, Warren, was also a doctor and when he died in 1952, only one doctor was left practicing in Alden, Dr. Raymond May. Dr. May practiced for forty-four years making house calls and serving as the school doctor. His office and home were located at 13104 Broadway. The sign that identified his office is included in the display.
